Master Halco Construction in Santa Cruz, CA | Brookside Contractors
We provide independent Master Halco fence and gate service across Santa Cruz, from the Westside to Live Oak and up into the foothills. The short version: we install and repair Master Halco vinyl, chain-link, ornamental, and aluminum systems almost every week here, and we know how salt air, sandy bluff soils, and coastal wind actually treat those materials. We’re not a Master Halco dealer and we’re not authorized by the manufacturer. We’re a Santa Cruz general contractor that works with their products because they hold up when installed correctly. Call (833) 725-3508 for a free estimate.

Why Santa Cruz Residents Choose Us for Master Halco Service
We install and repair Master Halco fence systems almost every week along the Santa Cruz coast, so we know how their galvanized, vinyl, and ornamental lines actually hold up in salt air and winter rain rather than how they look in a catalog. That field experience matters here. A fence that survives in Willow Glen will corrode at the fittings within a few years a few blocks from Seabright Beach. We build for what Santa Cruz actually throws at a fence line.
Nate Burrell, our owner and general contractor, grew up in South Santa Clara County and trained in construction technology at Gavilan College before spending nearly two decades on job sites throughout the region. He runs our Santa Cruz crews the same way he runs every project: match the material to the conditions, use hardware that won’t seize, and don’t bury posts shallow in bad soil. Do it once, do it right, everything else is just a future repair bill.
As an independent contractor, we bring our own field-tested hardware choices and gate-building methods to every Master Halco job. We use OEM Master Halco panels and posts where the original system is sound, and we swap in heavy-duty aftermarket hinges, latches, and tension hardware when the OEM fittings prove to be the weak point in coastal conditions.

Common Master Halco Construction Problems We Solve in Santa Cruz
- Salt-corroded chain-link posts and seized fittings. Within a few blocks of the ocean, galvanized posts and tension bands start to corrode, especially in the marine-layer fog that rolls through the Westside and Live Oak. By the time a homeowner notices, the tension bands are often salt-frozen solid and the top rail has pulled loose. We cut out the bad sections and reset them with properly bedded posts.
- Vinyl privacy panels bowing and racking in coastal wind. Master Halco’s vinyl privacy panels take a beating in Santa Cruz gales. What usually happens is the lower rail was set with thin aluminum inserts that creep over time, letting the bottom rail slide and the whole run rack out of square. We see this on exposed ridges and wide-open lots every winter. The fix is re-railing with deeper inserts, not just pushing the panels back.
- Gate hinges, latches, and drop rods binding as posts settle. Sandy bluff soil and river-bottom fill don’t hold a post the way inland clay does. When a gate post settles even half an inch, the latch bar misses the receiver and the gate drags on the ground. We reset the post and re-hang the gate with hardware matched to the actual soil, not to a catalog average.
- Concrete footings heaving after winter rain. Santa Cruz winters saturate sandy fill fast, and when that water has nowhere to drain, footings shift. Posts lean, rails pop out of their brackets, and the whole line loses its line. This is common in the flats near Soquel Creek and in the older subdivisions built on beach sand.
- Wind-blown panels and rails from shallow or unbonded posts. In fall and winter, Santa Cruz gets sustained northwest wind off the bay. A shallow post or a gate hung without proper bracing will fail the first good storm. We’ve replaced more than a few Master Halco runs that were set 18 inches deep when they needed 30.
Master Halco Service in Santa Cruz: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
On the Westside, we regularly hit buried redwood stumps and old beach-sand fill from the early 1900s subdivisions. Digging post holes there isn’t like digging anywhere else in Santa Cruz; one hole goes through clean sand, the next one stops dead on a stump the size of a kitchen table. That’s why we hand-dig or rent compact augers on most Westside jobs, and why our post-hole depth specs change from lot to lot. But the bigger local factor is permitting. Because much of Santa Cruz sits within or near the coastal zone, a fence or gate replacement that alters height, style, or placement can trigger a Coastal Development Permit during city or county review. Even a straightforward Master Halco vinyl run near the bluffs can carry a months-long approval tail that inland jobs never see. We flag that early in the estimate so homeowners don’t get surprised midway.
For anyone servicing the San Lorenzo Valley side of things, our Master Halco service in Felton page covers those conditions. The river-bottom soil up there creates different but equally real problems.
Master Halco Models & Products We Service in Santa Cruz
We work with the Master Halco lines most common around Santa Cruz homes and businesses: the vinyl privacy fence in both solid-board and semi-privacy styles, galvanized chain link with tension bands and tie wire, ornamental steel and iron fence and gate systems, and aluminum fence panels and posts. When the original system is sound, we use OEM Master Halco components. When the original fittings are the weakness, which is often the case near the ocean, we move to heavier aftermarket hardware. We keep common posts, rails, and gate hardware staged locally so turnaround on most Santa Cruz repair jobs is measured in days, not weeks.

AfterMaster Halco Service Pricing in Santa Cruz
Pricing is straightforward. We quote by the linear foot and by the post depth required. Here are the ranges we typically see:
| Service | Price Range |
|---|---|
| Vinyl Fence Installation | $3,500 – $9,000 |
| Aluminum Fence Installation | $4,000 – $10,000 |
| Metal Roof Installation | $15,000 – $40,000 |
What changes the number: post depth, soil conditions, gate count, whether we’re matching existing line or starting fresh, and whether the job sits inside the coastal zone and needs permit review. A free estimate from us means a written, line-item quote with those variables spelled out, not a round number pulled from a catalog. Call (833) 725-3508 and we’ll walk the line with you.

FAQs – Master Halco Construction in Santa Cruz
It can. If the fence or gate replacement changes height, style, or placement and the property sits within or near the coastal zone, a Coastal Development Permit may be required during city or county review. Not every Santa Cruz lot triggers this, but enough do that we check before quoting. Call (833) 725-3508 and we’ll tell you right away whether your address falls in the review area.
For most Santa Cruz lots, we recommend Master Halco’s aluminum panels with heavy-duty aftermarket hinges and latches. Aluminum doesn’t rust the way galvanized steel does, and it shrugs off the marine fog that eats at chain-link fittings within a few blocks of the beach. Vinyl works well too, but only if the lower rails carry deep inserts and the posts are set deep enough for the wind load. Galvanized chain link is fine inland; right on the coast we talk people through the maintenance reality first.
Most of the time, the gate can be fixed. We reset the post, re-hang the gate with hardware matched to the soil, and usually the whole thing swings clean again. The exception is when multiple posts along the run have settled or the rails have sheared. Then you’re looking at replacing the run, not just the gate. Call (833) 725-3508 and we’ll tell you which one you’re dealing with after a site visit.
The usual culprit is the lower aluminum insert. Cheaper installations use thin inserts that creep over years of coastal wind exposure. The bottom rail slips, the panel tilts, and once one panel racks, the run follows. We replace those rails with deeper inserts and re-set the panels straight. It’s a repair, not a full replacement, in most cases.
That depends on what failed. A gate re-hang or a few corroded fittings may run a few hundred dollars. Replacing a wind-damaged rail or resetting heaving posts runs higher. The best way to get a real number is to call (833) 725-3508 for a free, written estimate. We won’t bid a repair blind.
