Why Morgan Hill Homeowners Choose Belgard Construction

Brookside Contractors provides Belgard service in Morgan Hill, including construction, repair, and installation, working with the full Belgard paver, wall, and permeable pavement lines rather than a single showroom SKU. What sets our Belgard work apart is that we specify the base, drainage, and compaction detail Belgard’s engineering actually requires, especially on Morgan Hill’s expansive clay soils where shortcuts show up as settlement within two seasons. Call (833) 725-3508 to discuss your Belgard patio, driveway, or retaining wall project.

Morgan Hill sits where the flat valley floor meets the Diablo Range foothills, so Belgard hardscape here has to handle two very different ground conditions: dense clay in the in-town subdivisions and decomposed granite mixed with slope drainage in the hillside neighborhoods east and west of Monterey Road. Most paver failures we see are not defective Belgard product. They are base failures, edge restraint failures, or drainage failures under the product. That distinction matters, because it changes whether you patch, rebuild, or start fresh.

We are an independent Belgard service provider. Brookside Contractors is not affiliated with or authorized by Belgard, and we do not present ourselves as a factory program. What we bring is something more useful: hands-on experience with Belgard’s actual product lines, an honest repair-vs-replace conversation, and a general contractor’s understanding of drainage, grading, and structural loads that a paver-only crew often lacks.

Why Trust Brookside Contractors for Your Belgard Construction?

Our team works with Belgard systems regularly enough to know which product lines hold up in Morgan Hill and which ones need specific detailing to survive the valley’s shrink-swell clay. Belgard Mirage porcelain pavers, for example, are a different animal from the Cambridge Cobble concrete unit. Porcelain pavers are dense and dimensionally stable, but they demand a perfectly level setting bed and often a pedestal or thin-set system over concrete. Cambridge Cobble is more forgiving on a sand bed, but it flexes with the base. Installed over thin aggregate without geotextile separation, it will rut and shift within a few wet seasons.

Nate Burrell, owner and general contractor at Brookside Contractors, grew up in the Paradise Valley area of Morgan Hill and trained in construction technology at Gavilan College, where he also provides Belgard repair in Gilroy. He has spent the better part of two decades on job sites throughout South Santa Clara County, and he brings that local-soil knowledge to every Belgard project. Nate’s signature phrase applies directly to hardscape work: “Do it once, do it right – everything else is just a future repair bill.” A paver patio built over a hand-tamped two-inch base is not a patio. It is a future repair bill with a nice surface on top.

We match the material to the project. That means Belgard Dimensions slab pavers for a clean modern patio, Catalina permeable pavers where stormwater runoff or Morgan Hill’s drainage requirements come into play, and Anchor Highland Stone wall block with proper geogrid and drainage gravel where the grade changes. Your project, your brands, your site conditions. One contractor, every phase.

Common Belgard Construction Problems We Fix in Morgan Hill

  • Paver settlement and rutting in expansive clay soil. Morgan Hill’s valley floor is largely Lomer clay loam, which expands when wet and shrinks when dry. Belgard Cambridge Cobble and Catalina pavers laid over three inches of sand on native clay will heave in winter and rut under traffic by summer. The fix is not more sand. It is a deeper compacted aggregate base, geotextile fabric separation between the base and the native soil, and edge restraint that actually restrains.
  • Efflorescence and color fade from irrigation overspray. White chalky residue on Belgard concrete pavers is almost always soluble salts from Morgan Hill’s hard water wicking up through the paver, aggravated by sprinkler overspray. It is not a manufacturing defect. We correct it with proper cleaning and, more importantly, adjust the base drainage and irrigation so water is not constantly cycling through the paver body.
  • Wall block bulging or leaning on Anchor Highland Stone systems. A retaining wall that is leaning was almost never built with the correct geogrid placement, batter, or drainage gravel. Belgard’s engineering for Anchor Highland Stone assumes a compacted gravel column behind the wall and geogrid reinforcement at specified intervals. Skip either, and hydrostatic pressure plus soil weight pushes the wall face out. In Morgan Hill’s hillside subdivisions, where retaining walls often hold back several feet of cut slope, this is a structural issue, not a cosmetic one.
  • Joint sand washout and edge restraint failure. Belgard driveways and patios in Morgan Hill lose joint sand when stormwater sheets across the surface, and once the sand goes, the pavers start working independently. Edges walk toward the street or into the lawn. We rebuild the edge course with proper concrete haunching or a commercial plastic edge restraint spiked into the base, then re-sand with a quality polymeric sand that resists washout.
  • Permeable paver systems that were installed like standard pavers. Belgard permeable pavers, including Catalina permeable profiles, require an open-graded stone base and open-graded joint material so water can infiltrate. If someone installs them over a standard dense-graded base, they do not drain, and the system clogs. We frequently re-base permeable installations in Morgan Hill where the original installer treated permeable product like regular pavers.

Belgard Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

When we repair Belgard work, we use genuine Belgard pavers, wall units, matching caps, and edging so the color and dimensional continuity stays intact. For a Cambridge Cobble repair, that means sourcing from the same manufacturing plant and if possible the same production run, because concrete color shifts slightly between runs. For polymeric joint sand and geogrid, we use OEM-equivalent products from quality suppliers that meet or exceed Belgard’s published specs. The cost difference between real Belgard units and a close-enough paver from a big-box store is maybe a few dollars per square foot, but the visual mismatch is permanent.

Our decision rule is simple. If the Belgard units are sound and the failure is in the base, drainage, or edge restraint, we re-base and re-lay the original units. That is usually the right call for a five to ten year old patio where the pavers themselves still have good color and no significant chipping. If the units are cracked, deeply stained, or so badly chipped at the borders that resetting them means a patchwork, we tell you honestly that replacement is the better spend. Sometimes the right repair is a full rebuild in one section, not a band-aid across the whole surface.

Call (833) 725-3508 and we will walk your Belgard installation, measure what is actually failing, and give you a written line-item quote for the repair it needs, not the repair that pads a number.

Our Belgard Service Process – Step by Step

  1. 1
Diagnosis. We excavate at least one test pit to see what is actually under the Belgard surface: base depth, aggregate type, presence of geotextile, edge restraint condition. No diagnosis, no quote. Guessing at subsurface problems from a clean surface is how paver repairs fail twice.
  2. 2
Repair or rebuild. For base failures, we remove the affected Belgard units, re-excavate to proper depth, install geotextile separation, lay compacted aggregate in lifts, reset the original or matched units, and re-sand with polymeric joint sand. For retaining wall work, we rebuild the drainage gravel, reinstall geogrid at spec, and reset wall units at the correct batter.
  3. 3
Test. We run water across the finished Belgard surface to verify drainage and slope, and we check edge restraint under load. Permeable installations get an infiltration test to confirm water actually moves through the system rather than pooling on the surface.
  4. 4
Warranty. We stand behind the workmanship of our Belgard repairs with a written warranty on the base and installation. Belgard’s own product warranty still applies to the units themselves, and we will not do anything during a repair that would void that coverage.
