Unilock Construction in Scotts Valley, CA | Brookside Contractors
We’re Brookside Contractors, an independent Unilock installation and repair contractor serving Scotts Valley and the surrounding Santa Cruz Mountains. We install Unilock pavers and walls on steep, wooded hillside lots where drainage, slope, and hidden excavation surprises shape every project, so our Unilock work here doesn’t look like what you’d get on a flat showroom slab. Call (833) 725-3508 for a free estimate on paver driveways, patios, and retaining walls built for Scotts Valley conditions.

Why Scotts Valley Residents Choose Us for Unilock Service
Unilock makes a solid paver. But a paver is only as good as the base under it, and in Scotts Valley the base is where projects live or die. We’ve pulled up enough failed paver work on hillside lots to know that what works on a flat San Jose slab fails here when winter rain saturates the soil and runoff concentrates on a slope.
Nate Burrell, our owner, grew up in the Paradise Valley area of Morgan Hill when half those neighborhoods were still being framed. He trained in construction technology at Gavilan College and spent the better part of two decades on job sites across South Santa Clara County before bringing that experience to offer Unilock in Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz Mountains. What that means for your Unilock project is simple: we read the ground before we lay the paver. We’re independent, so we specify the Unilock product that fits your slope and drainage first, not the one a manufacturer rep pushed this quarter.

Common Unilock Construction Problems We Solve in Scotts Valley
- Efflorescence and salt bloom on Brussels Block after wet winters. Scotts Valley’s atmospheric-river rain pushes water through paver joints and into the base. When that base doesn’t drain, mineral salts wick up through the pavers and leave a white film on gray-toned units like Brussels Block. Fixing it means fixing the drainage, not just scrubbing the surface.
- Paver migration and joint-sand washout on sloped driveways above Scotts Valley Drive. Where the grade drops and water concentrates, an uncompacted or improperly stepped base lets pavers creep downhill. We re-establish the base in stepped lifts and re-lay with Unilock edge restraints so the driveway holds its lines.
- Estate Wall settlement or bulging on hillside retaining walls. When wall height and surcharge aren’t engineered for saturated hillside soils, and there’s no drain gravel or weep behind the units, hydrostatic pressure will push the wall out of plumb. We rebuild with proper drainage and reinforcement.
- Chipping and edge spalling on Brussels Block and Beacon Hill Flagstone. When a plow or tire crosses an unsupported paver edge over an old pier-and-post deck footprint, the units crack at the unsupported edge. That’s a base and edge-restraint problem, not a paver defect.
- Foundation and base voids from old redwood stumps. On wooded Scotts Valley lots, decaying redwood stumps leave underground voids that cause pavers to settle unevenly years after installation. We over-excavate, backfill, and compact before laying a single unit.
Unilock Service in Scotts Valley: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
On slopes above the Scotts Valley Drive corridor, excavation for a paver base routinely turns up hidden rock outcroppings and voids from old redwood stumps. Contractors who bid Scotts Valley jobs from a flat-lot playbook get a rude shock when the excavator bucket hits granite six inches down, or when a stump void collapses under a freshly compacted base. Our Unilock base-prep bids carry a rock-removal and over-excavation contingency that a flat-lot Felton Unilock service or San Jose bid would never include. That’s not padding, it’s what the ground here actually does. We’ve seen bids from out-of-town crews collapse mid-project when they hit Schist or a stump hole they didn’t plan for. We plan for it in advance.
Unilock Models & Products We Service in Scotts Valley
We install and repair Unilock Brussels Block, Beacon Hill Flagstone, Estate Wall retaining systems, and Pisa2 and Copthorne clay-look pavers. For anything visible or structural, we use genuine Unilock units and matching joint sand and edge restraints. For base aggregate and polymeric sand below the surface, we use quality aftermarket material where it equals or beats OEM performance. On a partial failure we repair the affected run and re-establish the base and drainage rather than tearing out the whole job. Full replacement only makes sense when the base itself is compromised, and we’ll tell you straight if that’s the case. Do it once, do it right, everything else is just a future repair bill. Our Unilock sales & service work covers the full product range.

FAQs – Unilock Construction in Scotts Valley
Yes, if the base is stepped into the grade and the edges are properly restrained. Unilock pavers themselves handle slope fine. What fails on steep Scotts Valley driveways is the base beneath them when water concentrates and washes out joint sand. We build paver driveways with stepped class-II base lifts, Unilock edge restraints, and drainage routed to daylight. Call (833) 725-3508 for a slope assessment.
We handle it, and we already planned for it. Our Scotts Valley bids include a rock-removal and over-excavation contingency specific to hillside lots above Scotts Valley Drive. If we hit shallow granite or a stump void, we over-excavate, backfill with compacted aggregate, and move forward. The price you agreed to covers it.
That white powder is efflorescence, mineral salts drawn up through the pavers by water that isn’t draining out of the base. It’s common in Scotts Valley after wet winters when the base under the patio is undersized. The fix is drainage repair, not surface cleaning. Call (833) 725-3508 and we’ll diagnose it.
Yes, but the engineering matters more than the block. Estate Wall units hold up if the wall is properly reinforced, drained, and built with the right setback for the height. On saturated hillside soil without drain gravel and weep holes, even quality SRW block will bulge. We engineer the drainage before we stack the first unit.
Not every year. With a proper base and good drainage, polymeric joint sand should hold for several seasons. If your pavers are washing out annually, the base drainage needs work, not just new sand. Sealing is optional and mostly aesthetic. Call (833) 725-3508 for an honest assessment of what your patio actually needs.
